The Atom Bomb Ends the War

During WWII a top secret government project was being developed.  It was called the Manhattan Project.  The Manhattan Project was established to invent an atomic bomb so that the United States could win the war.  This project was led by an American scientist, named J. Robert Oppenheimer, and was the best kept secret of the war.
After the atomic bomb was invented, it was first tested on July 16, 1945, in New Mexico.  The bomb worked successfully and resulted in a roar, a shock, and a blinding flash which were all apparent from 180 miles away.
On July 25, 1945, President Truman ordered the military to drop two atomic bombs on Japan- one on Hiroshima and the other on Nagasaki.  When the Japanese were warned that they faced "promp and utter destruction," unless they surrendered, they still refused to.  On August 6, 1945, two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan.  After the bombs were dropped, about 200,000 people died from radiation poisoning and injury.
On September 2, after the atomic bombs destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Emperor Hirohito of Japan surrendered and the war was officially over.
